I recently became a PaintAccess accredited painter and have been listed in the PaintAccess directory. I got three new quotes this month from PaintAccess, and the best part is that I don`t have to compete with unprofessionals who charge low prices.

What do fence painting services include?

Generally a fence painter’s services will include colour consultation, a discussion about the condition of your fence and what it might need in terms of repairs, repair services, surface preparation, painting and finishing.

Some painters may offer additional services like fence replacement (or replacement of a specific section), other structural work, special finishes, colour-matching, design consultation, and specialty paints for pool areas and environmentally sensitive locations.

It’s worth having a discussion with your chosen painting tradie about the services they provide, just to make sure they offer the services you feel you might need. Many painters offer free and obligation free quotes - especially here on PaintAccess - so you can rest assured knowing you’ll get everything you need to give your fence a fresh coat of paint.

WHAT'S THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO PAINT A FENCE?

In Australia, painting isn’t really a seasonal project. The only real consideration is rain, which we get in every season. Painting in summer when it’s warm can work well, because your paint will be drier, quicker, and your painter can apply multiple coats quickly - sometimes in the one day.

That said, painting in direct sunlight on a 40-degree day presents its own problems and paint that dries as you apply it can be problematic too.

Spring is often a great time to undertake a painting project because hardware stores and tradies tend to have special deals and discounts for DIY painters and home improvers who take advantage of the good weather and incentive to complete projects before the Christmas season.

IS IT BETTER TO PAINT YOUR FENCE WITH A BRUSH, ROLLER OR PAINT SPRAYER?

A paint sprayer is usually the most efficient way to paint a fence, but they are also the most expensive option, whether you buy one or rent one. Paint sprayers apply paint quickly and evenly and can get into corners and other harder-to-reach places.

Rollers are a great option for painting a fence relatively quickly, and they produce an even and consistent finish, but they can be awkward for painting vertical fences. There are more consumables associated with rollers including trays and roller covers, though both can be bought fairly cheaply.

Paint brushes are the slow-and-steady option, producing a less even finish but with more precision and control. It can also be possible to paint one thicker layer in place of 2-3 layers with a paint sprayer or rollers. You’ll spend less on consumables, making this the cheapest option by far, but your project will take longer than if you used either of the options above.

Is it worth painting an old fence?

The simple answer is, “it can be”. Depending on the condition of your old fence, it might be worth repainting it. Or it might be worth replacing sections and then replacing it. If your fence is too far gone then you may need to replace the whole thing.

Repainting an old fence is a great way to give it a new lease on life, especially if it is still structurally sound. If there are no broken palings or support posts and no obvious gaps or loose panels, painting a fence can make it look like new without having to invest in a whole new fence.

If you’re not sure, get a quote for fixing and painting your fence and then get a quote for replacing it. Depending on the amount of repairs needed, it may be immediately obvious which is the cheaper option. If they are fairly close in price, negotiate with the tradies you have discussed your project with. One or the other might be able to give you a good deal to help you decide.

How much does it cost to paint a fence in Sydney?

The cost of painting a fence varies, depending on the material, type of paint, size and other costs. Likely cost factors you will need to consider include:

FENCE SIZE AND TYPE:

the size of your fence plays a significant role in determining the overall cost. A longer or taller fence will naturally require more paint and take more time to complete. The material of the fence - whether it’s timber, metal, or Colorbond - also matters, as different materials may need special primers, paints, and preparation methods.

CONDITION OF THE FENCE:

if the fence is new, it may need just a coat of paint or stain, making the job relatively straightforward. However, if it's older and in poor condition, additional work might be required to clean, sand, and prepare the surface, which increases labour time and costs. Repairs such as replacing damaged boards or treating rust can also add to the price.

LOCATION:

costs may also vary depending on where you live in Sydney. Inner-city areas may attract higher prices compared to the suburbs due to higher demand and cost of living in those areas. If your property is difficult to access or requires special arrangements, such as working around plants or removing obstacles, that may also increase labour time and costs.

PAINT QUALITY AND TYPE:

the type and quality of paint you choose will affect the overall cost. Premium paints with UV resistance, weatherproofing, or other specialised properties may be more expensive but will provide better long-term results, especially in Sydney’s climate. Additionally, some fences may require specific types of paint, like oil-based for wood or rust-inhibiting paints for metal. The cost of paint typically ranges between $15 and $50 per litre, depending on the type and quality. For a 20-metre fence, you might need around 10-15 litres of paint, bringing the material cost to about $150 to $750.

LABOUR COSTS:

labour costs for painters in Sydney generally range between $40 and $60 per hour, depending on experience and the complexity of the job. For a typical fence painting job, which may take a day or two, labour costs can range from $300 to $1,000, depending on the size of the fence and the amount of prep work needed.

ADDITIONAL COSTS:

if significant repairs or prep work are required, you might need to spend extra on things like sanding, primer, or fence repairs, which could add another $100 to $300 to the total cost.
The cost of painting a fence in Sydney varies based on factors like size, condition, and paint quality. On average, you can expect to pay between $500 and $2,000 for a professional job, but DIY can lower costs if you have the time and tools. Ultimately, investing in a professional service can save you from potential mistakes and ensure a durable, attractive finish that stands up to the Sydney climate.

FAQs

Do fence painting services offer a warranty or guarantee on their work?

Like all trades, some fence painters offer a warranty and some don’t. In Australia, you have the right to certain consumer guarantees. Some businesses go further and provide specific warranties. A consumer guarantee is an automatic legal right given to consumers buying a product or service in Australia. When buying a service, consumers are entitled to a service that is safe and without fault, that looks acceptable and performs as expected. If the service does not, consumers have a right to a remedy which may include repair, replacement or refund.

A warranty is a voluntary promise or commitment made by the business selling the service to you. When you buy the service, the warranty becomes a right. It operates in addition to consumer guarantees however, it cannot limit or exclude consumer guarantees.

Can a fence painting service also repair damaged or rotten sections of a wooden fence?

Often, yes. Many fence painters have a range of general carpentry skills and can replace fence panels or support posts if they are rotten or broken. Be aware that if sections of your wooden fence have rotten because they are located in a particular place, the same may happen to any fence you replace it with. It might be worth considering installing a different type of fence (like a Colorbond fence) that can then be painted in the colour of your choice.

Are there any special preparations or treatments required before painting a fence?

Generally, no. Your fence painter will manage any preparation - like sanding - before they start. You should make sure that any part of your fence that is to be painted is accessible and that you have resolved any access issues with neighbours.

Can a fence painting service recommend the best type of paint or stain for a specific type of fence material?

Absolutely. Depending on the type of wooden fence you have, a stain or other treatment might be the best option, rather than paint. Luckily, the best people to apply an alternate treatment are the same fence painters you were considering in the first place. So it’s a great idea to have a chat with them about your options.

Do fence painting services offer any additional services such as sealing or waterproofing for a wooden fence after painting?

Often, yes. Depending on the type of paint you pick and the method of application, additional layers of protective material can be a good option for protecting your fence in the long term. Have a chat with your fence painter about the best method for protecting your freshly painted fence.
